Are you shifting from Kampala to Jinja? Is the thought of shifting your whole life to a new city making you feel overwhelmed?

Shifting to a new city can be exciting, yet, challenging in equal measure. A new city can mean new opportunities or a fresh start. On the other hand, it can mean saying goodbye to your loved ones and having to adjust to a new life.

Because of the numerous things you may have on your plate when shifting between two cities, you may need appropriate help and information about the shifting process.

If this will be your first time living in Jinja, you might be a little anxious about what to expect and if you will adjust to how people there live. Well, once you eventually do move there, you will realize that Jinja is among the best towns to live in Uganda.

At 1,143 meters above sea level and 87 kilometres to the east of Kampala, Jinja is a significant economic and industrial hub. Due to its location along the banks of Lake Victoria and the Nile River, the area experiences a warm and humid environment.

That being said, here is a list of things you should expect if you are shifting from Kampala to Jinja now or soon:

1. Finding a place to live

If you’ve not already found a place to live in Jinja, worry not. Overall, Jinja is a small quiet, and safe city, with plenty of leafy suburbs to live in such as Kamuli, Mayuge, and Iganga so finding a place to settle will not be a problem.

Jinja is fully established with all the facilities suiting a city such as schools, hospitals, banks, hotels, and restaurants.

As for rent, a standard one-bedroom apartment goes for an average of UGX 400,000, according to PropertyPro. A two-bedroom apartment is rented for an average of UGX 2,325,000 while a 3 bedroom apartment rents for about UGX 3,487,00.

2. Cost

A serious shifting company will not just quote a certain amount for your move off of their heads.

In fact, the cost of shifting from Kampala to Jinja is not cast into stone but will vary depending on several factors. These factors will either increase or decrease the cost of your move so it’s best to take note of them:

  • The size of your move

This is the most significant factor that many shifting companies look at when determining how much they will charge you for your move. Rightfully so, if you are shifting with a lot of household goods then you should expect the cost of shifting to be higher than if you have few items.

The size of your shifting load will directly affect the number of movers deployed for the job, the size of the truck to move your items, the wrapping materials needed and the amount of time the movers will need to pack the items.

That being said, the shifting company you choose to carry out your relocation will determine how much they will charge you once they carry out a pre-move survey

  • The shifting distance

The cost of shifting from one city to another will also be affected by the distance between the two cities. Therefore, if the move is long distance, you can expect that the move will cost you a little more than if the distance between your new and old house is short.

The distance between Kampala and Jinja is approximately 80 kilometres. Therefore, the shifting company you choose from Kampala to Jinja will use this to determine how much they will charge you depending on how much fuel they will use and the amount of time it will take.

  • The timing of your move

In the moving industry, we have what we call peak and off-peak seasons.

The peak season is usually at the end and beginning of a month when the demand for movers is usually the highest. During this time, the cost of shifting is generally high.

The off-peak season occurs around mid-month when the demand for movers goes down because not very many move around this time. If you want to reduce the cost of shifting from Kampala to Jinja, the off-peak season should be when you schedule your move.

  • Accessibility

When it comes to accessibility, three things come into play: the access road to both your new and old house, the floor number, and if your house has an elevator.

If the road leading to your house is so narrow that a truck cannot access the house easily, it will mean that a smaller vehicle will be needed to ferry the household goods from the house to the moving trucks. This may then increase the cost of your move.

On the other hand, if you live on the highest floor of your building and it doesn’t have an elevator, the move may require more movers and effort to move things quickly. This may also increase the cost of your move.

3. You will need the services of a reputable shifting company

If you are shifting from Kampala to Jinja, it is crucial that you hire the services of a reputable and experienced shifting company such as Nellions for these reasons:

  • Professional staff

When you hire our shifting services, your household items will be handled by well-trained movers who have enough experience in the industry. At Nellions, we train our staff on how to best handle our clients’ household goods to avoid any breakages or damages to them.

Additionally, Nellions’ staff have been trained in customer service, ensuring that any interaction between them and you is good.

  • Packing services

While you may be tempted to pack your household items by yourself, we advise against it. This is because you may end up packing your items badly and in the process of moving, end up damaging or breaking them.

At Nellions, we offer our clients packing services for their households and use high-quality packing materials such as bubble wraps, microfiber blankets, and packing paper to avoid damage and breakages.

  • Transportation

After packing, you will need safe and secure vehicles to transport your household goods from Kampala to Jinja.

When you hire Nellions, to conduct your move, your items will be loaded onto clean and lockable box-body trucks. Your items will be arranged according to size, sturdiness, and fragility so that there are no damages in transit.

  • Setting up

Unpacking and arranging your items in your new house is the most important and usually the longest step in the shifting process. We also understand how important it is to leave our clients fully settled and comfortable in their new homes.

This is why at Nellions, our staff ensures that we place your household items in the matching rooms of the old house, or as directed by the client.

We make sure everything is put away properly and take care of the small stuff such as tying your beds, connecting cookers, hanging your clothes, stacking your shoes and books, installing your DSTV, mounting your TV, and hanging art.

  • Insurance

At Nellions, we understand the importance of being insured as a shifting company. The truth is, accidents happen and items may end up being damaged or broken during shifting. If this does occur during your move, you are entitled to compensation. For this reason, we have different insurance covers such as professional liability, public liability, all risk, fidelity, etc.
